Kia ora social anthropology postgrads and staff, Please see the attached for a seminar that Fran Monro will be giving soon (Friday, 11:30). Ruth is one of Fran’s PhD supervisors, so she is housed both in Te Tumu and in our Social Anthropology programme. Fran’s project looks fascinating. Where: Te Iringa Korero R3S10 Tēnā koutou This is an invitation to join Fran Munro (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Ngāti Porou) as she presents her PhD research/proposal as part of her seminar to meet requirements for confirmation into the PhD programme: Māori Perspectives on Living Human Tissue Models When treating gastric cancer in Aotearoa, clinicians use international information because we don't know what our gastric cancer sub-types are. We also don't know which treatments are most effective for those sub-types and how different populations respond differently to various treatments. A more efficient approach to understanding this better is to grow human tissue sample in the lab to use in the treatment testing phase. There are serious cultural implications for Māori when growing human tissue, in regards to concepts of tapu, noa and mana. This PhD research aims to better understand Māori understandings and perspectives of growing human tissue in the lab that will be ultimately used to determine the most effective treatments for Aotearoa-specific cancer sub-types. Upon understanding whānau Māori perspectives of these technologies, we will co-create laboratory processes and protocols based on tikanga, that enable whānau Māori to feel that it is safe to be involved in such a project. All are welcome to attend. Nau mai, haere mai. Aku mihi Karyn
