NZ-USA Catalyst Rapid Sea Ice Decline project: April 2026 update

Kia ora koutou Here is the NZ-USA Catalyst Rapid Sea Ice Decline project April 2026 update: * Great news: NSF has made the award to the USA members of our project! Thanks to everyone with their persistence and hard work at the USA end. * Fieldwork update: Alessandro and the UK/Saltenna team are now working to do their planned instrument testing with Achille and Andy in Alaska rather than Antarctica, but are still part of the project. This change partly happened because they needed a team of four people for 28 days, but Antarctica NZ had only approved 3 people and were asking us to reduce to 21 days as well. We hope that the testing goes well and they can be in Antarctica for the full project if we get to that stage. * NZ subcontracts: These have now either been signed off, or are about to be. * Rodrigo Gomez-Fell started work on 1 April as the NZ postdoc on the project. He has 6 months of time spread over the next few months, with further work from the EU Synchrony project after that, which is related to our project. * Ocean and atmosphere observations discussion session: We will have this call (UTC) 2130 Wednesday 16 April 2026. I'd added some people to the email list since the invitation was sent out, so I will resend the Zoom/calendar invitation to this list shortly (apologies for cross-postings). The idea of these sessions is to discuss the milestones/plans, and coordinate the research. In May, we will have a similar session on remote sensing, so keep an eye out for a poll from Rodrigo.
